About Jean Pigozzi

Jean Pigozzi is a French-born, Italian photographer. His work can be generally defined as belonging to the spontaneous snapshot genre; he has been using a Leica camera since a young age to capture the world around him. Pigozzi’s diaristic practice reveals observations of his own daily life and those of his immediate social circle.

Pigozzi spends much of the year at his home on Simca, an island on the Pacific Coast of Panama. He established the nearby Liquid Jungle Lab in 2003, a research center for scientists and students to study marine conservation.

At over a meter wide, Panama Wave, 2020, demonstrates Pigozzi’s continuing interest in the ocean. Over the last few years he has been photographing waves from a specific spot on the island. On the one hand the image presents harmony in texture and pattern, on the other, it speaks to the destruction created by, and to, the natural world.

Born in 1952, Paris, France; lives and works between Rome, Italy; Antibes, France and Panama and is often in LA.
